Lusail Expressway Bridge Demolition

Equipment/Machines used:
Crawler cranes, Mobile cranes, Manlifts, Scissors lifts, Excavators, Trucks and loading shovels.

Scope of work:
The existing bridges linking west bay lagoon and Lusail had to had to be removed to facilitate the construction of the new Lusail expressway. The demolition work took place over 2 years in 4 phases.

How the work was executed:
The bridges were made up of a series of precast concrete box beam sections approximately 30m long x 1.5m wide x 1.5m high these beams were sitting on a series of columns and abutments at either end.  The bridge beams were supported using a specially engineered propping system and separated by wire saw cutting.

Each beam was then lifted as a complete section each weighing around 120 tonnes and placed on the ground using a crawler crane, a similar approach was used for the columns.

The foundations and abutments were demolished using excavators.
